Every Moment Matters: The First Month as Mrs. Louisiana

Mrs. United States 2011 is quickly approaching!  This national pageant is held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the fun kicks off July 31st where contestants from all 50 states and U.S. Territories will meet for one week and the opportunity of a lifetime.  There are three phases of competition; each phase of competition is weighed and scored equally.  Interview, swimsuit and evening gown will be judged in an effort to find a woman who best integrates intellect with beauty.  Preliminary competition will be on the evening of August 3rd and finals are on August 4th.

June has been filled with fun, lots of preparation, and traveling around the state to promote the title of Mrs. Louisiana.  My husband, Richard, and I celebrated winning Mrs. Louisiana with a cruise to Mexico where the Carnival staff made us feel welcome and like celebrities.  Five days to relax together and get our minds focused towards nationals was just what we needed!  Sleeping in, fine dining, beautiful beaches, scuba diving, and dancing - what a great way to celebrate being Mrs. Louisiana!  Be sure to ask us about our "Grease" performance in Cozumel, staring the Valenti's as Danny and Sandra Dee!

Before we left for our cruise and in a week's time frame, however, there were some items to take care of: photo shoot for my nationals' head shot, setting up a Facebook page and blog, sending in initial paperwork, writing a Press Release, creating a sponsorship flyer and ad, contacting the local papers and news stations, contacting sponsors, and (don't forget) pinching myself (over and over!).  One of my favorite days was spent doing my nationals' head shot.  I spent an entire day at Say Eggplant Photography in Houma with Bobby Lecompte and had the amazing Brandi Clement from Unique Trends in Thibodaux style me up!  We literally shot all day, and had so much fun!  I cannot thank them enough for the sponsorship.

So where do you start?  Let's see - there's the evening gown, swimsuit, state costume, interview outfit, rehearsal outfits, night out outfits, dinner outfits, makeup lessons, photo shoots, interviews, appearances, travel arrangements to be made, press releases, emails and "pageant stuff."  (I think that's all.)  It's a full time job!  This takes research, fittings, financial dedication, lots of time, and supportive patrons who are willing to help.  But guess what?  I'm up for the challenge and our Geaux Louisiana campaign!

I have an amazing support team, and I could not be where I am today without them.  My husband, family and friends are doing everything in their power to support me, and they believe in me - day in and day out.  Small blessings along the way have kept my confidence in tact, and I have turned over this experience to God - it's in His hands.  Additionally, my former and present students have written in to tell me of their accomplishments and I love hearing how what they've received in class is helping them in their lives and careers.  I also have a few sponsors that I need to recognize for their support:
  • Dr. Hubbell - A Jeune Medical Spa
  • Say Eggplant Photography
  • Brandi Clement with Unique Trends
  • Galleria Fitness
  • Fitness NV
  • Planet Beach Contempo Spa of River Ridge
  • NetFashionAvenue.com
  • Rhinestone Runway
  • Brianna Waguespack Coaching
I have managed to make a few appearances and promote my title over the last month, too.  I worked the Bobby Hebert/Cystic Fibrosis golf tournament where two of our holes (alone) raised over $1800 for Cystic Fibrosis!  I judged the Miss Camellia City baby pageant, went to Las Vegas to support our Miss Louisiana USA, Page Pennock, at Miss USA, and have started working at a newly founded, local charter high school.  I continue to support Kiva and Heifer International, and am proud to say that I am a partner with the United Way for Greater New Orleans.  Keeping pace with my chosen platform, however, I will be promoting breast and cervical cancer awareness throughout my year as Mrs. Louisiana.

July 5th I return to Nicholls State University's campus and start teaching summer classes.  I can't wait to educate these learners on advertising and services marketing!   The next month will be exciting, and I’m ready!

Geaux Louisiana!

Dream Big : The 2011 Mrs. Louisiana Pageant

On Sunday, May 15, I heard those words, "Mrs. Louisiana United States is....Laura - Lott - Valenti!"  I cannot begin to explain how that moment felt, and all I could do is grasp my face in hands and tear up as I humbly began to realize that dreams, hard work and perseverance aligned.  It was my time, Olivia Simpson (Mrs. Louisiana America, 2010) whispered, as she hugged me congratulations.

Pageant day started briskly at 10:00 am with a panel interview of five distinguished judges from around the state.  I was blessed to have the support of my husband, Richard, and good friends Rachel, Millie and AK to calm my nerves as I headed to the lobby.  I even had to run into the parking lot before one last hair spray to do some jumping jacks!  The text messages of "good luck" from my family and dear friends gave me moments of confidence, and to the lobby we practically ran.  Quickly it was my turn as delegate #4 to enter the room.  I took a deep breath, and walked in with a huge smile, "ready."

Interviews went great!  Rehearsals ran smoothly as we learned the dance and stage spots, and the anticipation began to build up for the evening for all of us.  Hair in rollers, tanning lotions applied, last minute diet cokes - the works!  Mona, my preliminary director, practiced with me one last time before hair and makeup were finished, and then it was showtime!  At 6:00 pm we headed on stage.  Swimsuit was the first round of competition, followed by a parade of gowns, evening gown competition and on-stage conversation.

I can tell you that we had some lovely, accomplished and beautiful women on stage that night.  It is amazing what some of these women have done with their lives and family, and I was honored to meet all of them and learn their stories.  As the moments drew closer, I thanked God my mum was in the audience shaking her head "yes" when I was on stage and that Rachel waited with me in the doorway to give me strength.

It was my third attempt at Mrs. Louisiana, the fist two being in the America system.  All I can say is,“Build a dream and the dream will build you” (Robert Schuller).  If it weren't for those experiences, I wouldn't be the person I am today.  I will tell you that I put the night into God's hands with every thought, and He made it happen.  I am only grateful.

Honored and privileged to represent my native state of Louisiana, and I am very excited about this journey!  I plan to make the most of it, and hope you'll follow me through it all.  No person gets where they are alone, and I appreciate all the support, from the "go get 'em's!" to the "congratulations!"  I remember how each and every one of them made me smile.

To my husband for driving me around the state with preliminary titles and showing Louisiana that this team is ready to be the Mr. and Mrs. Louisiana - I love you dearly.  We are creating our lives as God would have it, and I am glad you are the one that winked at me on match.com.  To my family (mum and daddy, KT and Josh, Ms. Stacy, Nicky, and Kim) - I love you for being there and my biggest raving fans.  To my dearest friends (Rachel, Lauren, Brandy, Millie, AK, and Mona) with whom I have special relationships with all of you - I am here because of your support, and thank you for all the help you have given me.  For all the pageant sisters and family that I have met over the last year (Sandy, Aquilla, Page, Christian, Kelly, Madison and Adrienne), and for those to come, I am excited to share this with each and every single one of you.  For my entire support system: I could not, and would not, be here without all of you.  -Thank you-

Now - let's rock nationals and make Louisiana proud!!!

Yours truly, Mrs. Louisiana United States, 2011, Laura Lott Valenti
